Essex County Family Legal Aid Project
Together with another legal aid program, MVLS has an office
in Salem paid for by a special federal grant to provide help for cases
involving domestic violence.
Low Income Tax Clinic
An MVLS staff attorney helps low-income tax payers, particularly
non-English speakers, to get earned income tax credits.
Cambodian Outreach Program
The Cambodian-American community in Lowell has faced significant barriers
of language and culture to obtaining civil legal assistance. In March
of 2001, MVLS began its Cambodian Outreach Project (C.O.P.) as part of
a renewed effort to reach out to the Cambodian community of Lowell. The
project is funded by the Harry H. Dow Memorial Legal Assistance Fund to
provide legal assistance, community legal education and outreach to the
Cambodian population.
The project staff (a directing paralegal and two part-time
attorneys) has been meeting with various Cambodian organizations in Lowell,
informed them of the new partnership and enlisted advice and suggestions
on ways to better serve the Cambodian community. C.O.P. has conducted
a community needs assessment meeting of clients and providers, sponsored
several educational workshops for community advocates and their clients,
and represented an increasing number of Cambodian clients in all areas
of poverty law by bringing in for assistance as needed other MVLS advocates
in specialized areas.
